Tattoo Pinup speed painting demo (week 18) by DrakePin-up
http://drakepin-up.com/ I was very unmotivated to start this weeks drawing. I have all the excuses that anyone could have not to complete this challenge but I try to just open photoshop and start a pose. Then I am hooked. Being unmotivated and uninspired is an awful thing for any artist. After spending the week drawing and designing for my day job, it is hard to find the energy to keep this up.I hope that broadcasting this process motivates someone to start a painting or even a painting a week. Even if you do not like the end result (which some weeks I have not), enjoy the process and push yourself, you will always learn something. I once heard that an artist needs to create over 10,000 pieces of art before their first great piece. I hope these are counting toward my first 10,000. For me a pin-up a week is about the discipline to push through those excuses and at least start something, even when you have nothing left after a long week. I usually start these on Friday night after my family goes to sleep then whatever I dont finish that night, I try to wrap up on Saturday night. Usually these have been taking me 2.5 to 5 hours depending on the week. This one is 100% photoshop. The tattoo image is from week 6. Unfortunately I am not able to show my professional work. Please don't think that I have given up on the pin-ups, but I think that I painted until I was physically ill, and I am now trying to recover. I obviously like to try out different techniques as I go, but the story, or theme, or reason behind each drawing has been morphing as well. My focus was not on this at all. You can tell by the video that I struggled with the pose, the face, the overall concept, but I was able to finish. I learn something every week, whether it is good or bad. The good part about this challenge is that I know that I have to show it. There were several times during this drawing that I would have thrown it away and started over, but I did not have that much time...  For this weeks pin-up, I wanted to create a simplified graphic style with a lot of texture. This next week will be the most challenging week of the year. My wife and I are expecting our second child scheduled for delivery this Wednesday. If I can get a drawing out this week, I should be able to make it throughout the year.... we shall see. There was a lot of texture in the previous weeks painting that gave it a lot of energy and made it dynamic, but this week, I thought the womans curves could work on their own. It REALLY helps. I have put up...  This week I travelled to New York on a business trip. I was a very inspiring trip, even if it doesnt reflect in this piece. The first night I was having a drink at a bar and looked up at some of the images on the walls and there were all these models putting on make-up. It was head shots, but I could see the pin-up potential. The next night I went to see the Adams Family on Broadway, which was not that great, but I thought I should do a goth pin-up...  For this week's pin-up I was inspired by the SuperBowl rivalry and decided to have 2 girls in the drawing wearing the team colors. The New Orleans Saints (black and gold) and the Indianapolis Colts (blue and white ). I had a few technical problems with the capture software and you will notice two sections that get cut short during the video. Either way, it was fun and I learned a few things along the way.Check back every Monday for a new Pin-up...  This week was was all about ideation and quick sketching at work. Well that and a lot of meetings and presentations, but when I was drawing, it was fast and loose. This weeks pin-up was an exploration in taking this technique of pushing and pulling value to create silhouettes and forms. The interesting thing that I find with this technique is that the more you work on it, the more you lose the energy of the original paint strokes and gesture. I like...  This week was quite challenging, both conceptually and finding the time. My second daughter was born this wednesday and as you can imagine, this was my last priority. I wanted to keep my commitment to a pi-up a week in 2010 so I tried a different technique. In this painting I tried some new brushes and layer effects to create a loose painting style. It was fun, and I liked the sketch, but I think I was too preoccupied to bring it together as a painting....  March Madness!! College basketball is in full force these days and I needed a theme for the week, so here it is. I struggled with the pose for this one and after trying out several final four configurations, I decided to go with a somewhat standard pose with a few new techniques. The biggest change for this weeks style was to go to a thinner line width overall and focus the painting on the forms. I personally like the heavier line weights and feel...  This week's Pin-up is a success to me because I was able to find bits of time throughout the week to work on it and try things out. Having a one week old in the house makes things pretty difficult, but this video is made up of 21 different clips ranging from 5 minutes to 40 minutes depending on the time I had at each sitting. Obviously inspired by comic book art his week, I wanted to have the heroic pose with the cape blowing in the breeze, but with a twist. The clasic pin-up pose occasionally would have the wind blowing the dress up in the back to reveal the hidden garter or stockings. The goal was to combine those two concepts and see what happens. This weeks theme was directly connected to a personal event that happened this weekend. I have sold the Wakeboard boat that I have been severely neglecting the last couple of years as my family has been growing and my professional commitments and responsibilities have been drowning my "leisure time" (pun intended). It was a 2005 Malibu Wakesetter VLX and I custom ordered every detail of her. I even went to the factory to witness the assembly....  I started this one off thinking about the full body scanners at TSA and it morphed into a full "strip" search pin-up. This is my answer to Homeland Security! I have been asked to create a hockey themed pin-up for some time now and I thought it would be very appropriate to create it during the biggest game of the decade. USA vs. Canada. I have played and coached ice hockey for almost 20 years now, so the hockey pin-up is something that I wanted to get right.... This demonstration represents the processes that can be used to isolate each of the visual requirements for a strong storytelling composition.
