Digital painting tutorial archer horseman in snow speedpainting concept art. This tutorial shows you how to draw and paint an environmental concept design of a Mongol archer in the snow region. Full post here In this tutorial I start with a rough idea of a forest covered with snow somewhere in the north. I first explore with shape of the trees, branches and foliage. Then I use texture brushes to convey texture on the tree density in the background. Then I add more trees in the foreground and background. At this point, I am only concern with shapes and composition. Then I use lasso tool to create big foliage in the foreground. Then branches and foliage on the right side. Once I have my scene fully composed. Then I add a character on a horseback into the scene. At this stage, I only focus on big shapes, lighting and base to get the overall look and feel of the scene first. In this case, I chose strong lighting direction from the right so that I can have good cast shadow on the left. Then I add leave the mid-section open so that I can create the bright shining light area in the mid ground. Once all the elements and composition is set with good lighting then we can start doing a bit more detail. You have to first take care of the big shape then you can think about adding design and little detail. I use a lot of normal layer and just paint like I would paint traditionally in this video. But with a lot of help from custom brushes. Hopefully this can be really helpful to you all. Again I usually start my image from shapes and build those shape up along with composition in mind. The lighting and value. Tips on speedpainting. Keep it simple first and make your image clear and easy to read or identify. Things you should focus on primarily. 1) Shapes and composition 2) Depth of field 3) Overall Design and look.
