This week was was all about ideation and quick sketching at work. Well that and a lot of meetings and presentations, but when I was drawing, it was fast and loose. This weeks pin-up was an exploration in taking this technique of pushing and pulling value to create silhouettes and forms. The interesting thing that I find with this technique is that the more you work on it, the more you lose the energy of the original paint strokes and gesture. I like...
http://drakepin-up.com/ Having fun with this one this week. Along the way, so far in 2010, I have tried a few different approaches to the themes. I obviously like to try out different techniques as I go, but the story, or theme, or reason behind each drawing has been morphing as well. Since I have been insanely busy at work these days and my mind is constantly brainstorming new ideas and concepts for my real work, I just want to tune out and focus...
http://drakepin-up.com/ I was very unmotivated to start this weeks drawing. I have all the excuses that anyone could have not to complete this challenge but I try to just open photoshop and start a pose. Then I am hooked. Being unmotivated and uninspired is an awful thing for any artist. After spending the week drawing and designing for my day job, it is hard to find the energy to keep this up.I hope that broadcasting this process motivates someone...
http://drakepin-up.com/ This week had to be a quick one and I was able to create it in under an hour and fifteen minutes. Between the unreal deadlines that are racing toward me at the office, a Mothers day weekend, and the fact that I started P90x this week, it needed to get done and I had to fit this in after a grueling workout. being a designer/artist means that I dont get away from my computer or out of meetings very often so I am extremely sore...
http://drakepin-up.com/ Inspiration and commitment got me through this week. I was put to the test this weekend. I had a bachelor party to go to this weekend in Las Vegas and zero time during the week to create a pinup. I decided to try to work on it at the pool at the Hard Rock Hotel where we had a cabana for the day. This was a crazy goal. Security at the pool could not figure out why I needed to bring in a computer bag into the pool area and I...
http://drakepin-up.com/ This was an off week. My focus was not on this at all. You can tell by the video that I struggled with the pose, the face, the overall concept, but I was able to finish. I learn something every week, whether it is good or bad. The good part about this challenge is that I know that I have to show it. There were several times during this drawing that I would have thrown it away and started over, but I did not have that much time...
http://drakepin-up.com/ I have been living in my studio since Memorial day incredibly inspired and motivated. Unfortunately I am not able to show my professional work. Please don't think that I have given up on the pin-ups, but I think that I painted until I was physically ill, and I am now trying to recover. This is my first one after a few weeks off and I am motivated to continue the journey. It may have been good to get away for a while...
http://scotdrake.com/ This was a fun little exercise. It has been a while since I have created a new speed painting. I decided to press record and see what happened. It is obviously not a well thought out concept, but I wanted to show depth in a scene with a complexity of scale that was represented by using composition, perspective, atmosphere, and indicated details. This was created in Photoshop without zooming in. This helps to stay focussed on...
This was a fun little "de-stress" painting that I created last night. There is not a lot of "there" there in the concept, but it was a nice exercise. I have been trying to find a good balance of natural world and sci-fi. I enjoy seeing visions of the future that are optimistic, but they seem to miss the drama that a dogfight between concept spaceships ripping through the middle of the piece, an invasion of a robot army or an alien...

This is a painting that I created to hang in my house. We have been remodeling the house and I could not decide on what to hang. This may not be right either, but it was a good excuse to finish a high res piece of art for fun. My wife requested a peaceful landscape. I will be printing this on canvas about 55" wide. We will see how it looks in the space. Hope you enjoy,Scot
